The following questions were discussed during the specialized training program on Digital Transformation of the Press, focusing on the technical foundation for digital journalism, jointly organized by the Press Authority (Ministry of Information and Communications) and Google, with the support of IPS and Anymind Group as the implementing partners. This training program took place in Hanoi from October 25th to October 27th, 2023. 
The training program offers knowledge and skills to support news organizations in digital transformation within the unique contexts of each newsroom, encompassing three key themes: 
  • Understanding and Growing Readers: Enhancing the scope of reader engagement and interaction. 
  • Data Solutions - Establishing Sustainable Data Foundations: Investigating data collection, analysis, and utilization methodologies for fostering digital business growth. 
  • Constructing a Comprehensive Advertising Revenue Development Strategy: Formulating and advancing a digital advertising strategy. 
Attending the opening session of the training program were Mr. Nguyen Thanh Lam, the Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Information and Communications; Mr. Tong Van Thanh, the Director General of the Department of Journalism and Publishing of the Central Committee's Publicity and Education Commission; Ms. Mai Huong Giang, the Deputy Director of the Press Authority, representatives from Google, as well as leaders, technical experts, and business representatives from various media agencies in Hanoi and the Northern region.

Over the three days of training, experts in journalism development and participants shared valuable knowledge and experiences regarding digital media business, with a focus on the three aforementioned themes. The technical workshop sessions, held in the afternoons of the training days, provided media organizations with an opportunity to apply the newly acquired knowledge and receive direct technical support from a team of experts.

The first training session on "Understanding and Growing Readers" featured an expert panel discussion on User Engagement and Development Strategies, led by Mr. Nguyen Quang Dong, Director of the Institute for Policy studies and Media Development (IPS). The panelists for this discussion included Mr. Ngo Duc Kien, Editor-in-Chief of Nghệ An Newspaper, Mr. Nguyen Van Ba, Editor-in-Chief of Vietnamnet, and Ms. Dao Thu Ha, Director of the Digital Marketing Department VnEconomy. Given the current challenges in the media industry, where advertising revenue and state budget support are both declining, coupled with decreasing traffic from social media platforms, the panelists agreed that newspapers need to formulate reader-centric strategies and invest in technology to prepare for the digital business landscape.

The training course is within the framework of the Google News Initiative (GNI) 2023 program, jointly organized by the Press Authority (Ministry of Information and Communications) and Google. This program will continue with three training sessions held in Ho Chi Minh City from November 1st to November 3rd, 2023. Launched in 2018, GNI represents Google's commitment to supporting media organizations in achieving effectiveness and sustainability in the digital age.
